Weight Loss Strategies

Over the next few blog post I want to explore different weight loss strategies; examining which ones work and which may not.  When a person gets older their metabolism slows drastically.  If you aren’t the one who was gifted with a fast metabolism, I want to give some strategies I have found that actually work.  Feel free to leave comments on which ones work for you, which ones don’t.  I’m going to give a few diet suggestions and foods you need to avoid.  So let’s start with the Adkins, Low Carb diet.

With the Adkins diet, low carbohydrates is the key to success.  The thing is sometimes it is hard to find low carb foods when you are use to eating chips, breads, noodles and plenty of vegetables.  I have tried this diet and have lost over 35 pounds in three months.  The trick to this diet is staying strickly low carb.  Some people have premisconceptions on what foods are low carbohydrate foods, but they aren’t.  So let us go over a few low carb foods.

On this diet, you can pretty much eat any meat you want.  Keep in mind that doesn’t mean you can smother any kind of gravy or sause over it.  You can’t eat breaded meats, because it has carbs.  It can be grilled or fried or broiled but not with bread or a bunch of sauses.  Meats include, beef, pork, chicken, pork loin- which means barbeque- yeah.

Many thinks any kind of vegetable is safe but it isn’t.  Low carb vegetables are pretty much the green ones.  These include brocolli, lettuce, asparagus, green beans, green peppers, cucumbers, spinach.  Keep in mind Spinach is high in niacin and zinc, as well as protein, fiber, vitamins A, C, E and K, thiamin, vitamin B6, folate, calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, copper, and manganese.  It is great for the body.  Add Cauliflower, cabbage, mushrooms, olives, garlic, to the list of great low carb veggies.   If you like chinese type foods add: bamboo shoots, water chestnuts to the list.

Pretty much all cheeses are low carb foods too.  Such as chedar, mozerella, cream cheese, feta, brie, mozzarella, ricotta , queso, swiss, etc….  This diet includes butter and creams. Some salad dressings are low carb, but make sure to look.  Peanut butter is good too- in small doses.

There are limited fruits that are low carb such as strawberry, raspberry, blackberry, Cantaloupe, watermelon, avocados, honeydew, peaches. If you buy these, make sure they don’t have any added sweeters or sugar to them.

Sugar is High Carb!  So look for an alternative sweetner or do without.  We use Stevia, Splenda.

I’ll give some sample recipes next time.
